About

Hello, I'm Helen.

I read Natural Sciences at Cambridge (Trinity, 2010), specialised in Theoretical Physics, then realised within six weeks of a doctorate that I missed teaching more than I missed research. I've been tutoring full-time ever since.

I work with about twenty students at any one time — that's the maximum I'll take so I can give each one real attention. Most stay with me from Year 10 through A-Levels. A handful have gone on to Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial; most have gone on to be quietly excellent at the universities they actually wanted to attend.

I don't promise A*s. I promise a student who, by the time they walk into the exam room, knows the syllabus inside out and trusts their own thinking. The A*s tend to follow.

— Dr. Helen Cresswell, MSci (Cantab)

How it works

Four steps to a quieter parent.

Free 30-min chat

We sit down (in person or on Zoom) with the student. I ask them about school, what they find hard, what they actually want. No commitment.

Diagnostic session

A short paper tailored to their level. I read it that evening and send a written summary: what's solid, what's shaky, where I'd start.

Weekly lessons + structured plan

One 60- or 90-min session a week, term-time. Each session has a topic, a worksheet they keep, and homework they can finish in 45 minutes.

Exam-term intensive

From Easter until the exam, we shift to past-paper drills, marking schemes, and the question-craft that schools rarely teach explicitly.

From parents & students

Quiet, repeat business.

Helen took my son from a predicted C in GCSE Maths to a 9. More importantly she taught him how to revise — he's now doing his A-Levels with no tutoring and consistent A grades. Worth every penny.Year 11 → 9

I came to Helen genuinely thinking I wasn't a "maths person". She showed me that wasn't a real category. Got an A* in A-Level Maths and a place at Bristol for Physics.A-Level → A*

— Adam K., former student · Summertown

We tried three tutors before Helen — none of them stuck. She actually listens to my daughter and doesn't talk down to her. Three years in and we're sticking till A-Levels.3 years running
